Minister for Police and Emergency Services, Simon Corbell, today joined local fire fighters to launch a high profile community awareness campaign about the dangers in homes which can cause house fires during the colder months.
Mr Corbell said more than 40 per cent of residential fires in the ACT were a result of a fire starting in the kitchen.
"During the winter season last year, 85 per cent of kitchen fires started because cooking was either unattended or forgotten about all together," Mr Corbell said.
"I would hope this campaign will raise awareness and ensure Canberrans take extra precaution following the fire safety advice of the ACT Fire Brigade."
The 2011 Winter Home Fire Safety campaign, developed by the ACT Fire Brigade in partnership with NRMA Insurance, will run for 1 month and include radio, press, internet advertisements and promotional wooden spoons featuring the key message ‘Don't stop looking while you're cooking'.
This will be reinforced with a range of helpful advice on the ACT Fire Brigade website http://www.firebrigade.act.gov.au/ including:
"The ACT Fire Brigade is on standby 24 hours a day, 365 days a year, to come to our aid if a house fire does occur in your home, but I strongly urge every household to spend some time following the tips above to prevent a fire starting in the first place," Mr Corbell said.
