ACT Health has met or exceeded all requirements for four-year accreditation from the Australian Council of Healthcare Standards (ACHS), with the national accrediting body identifying pockets of excellence and industry leadership within the organisation, ACT Health Minister, Katy Gallagher MLA, announced today.
Mental Health ACT was recognised for being a forward looking, progressive health service with a strong customer focus and exceptional levels of consumer participation, achieving seven Excellent Achievement ratings and an Outstanding Achievement rating, well above the requirements for accreditation.
"These are excellent results and I am especially pleased that the assessors identified no areas in the ACT Health system that required high priority action to address concerns," Ms Gallagher said.
The Minister said four-year accreditation was awarded to organisations that had reached a high level of achievement and was an acknowledgement of the hard work and commitment of staff in ACT Health to provide a high quality health service to the people of the ACT.
"A consistent theme in the report is the dedication and enthusiasm of staff, and the organisation's desire to strive for continual improvements," Ms Gallagher said.
"The results for Mental Health ACT are particularly pleasing as the Outstanding Achievement rating for its electronic health record - MHAGIC - recognises that it is now an industry leader.
"The assessors were impressed with Mental Health ACT's recovery model and found it to be a superior service with enthusiastic and visionary senior management and excellent systems in place to ensure the safety and wellbeing of consumers, staff and visitors."
The seven Excellent Achievement ratings were awarded to Mental Health ACT for:
Excellent Achievement ratings were also awarded to ACT Health as a whole in the following areas:
Assessors were also impressed with the ACT's dental health programs, health promotion activities and the Capital Asset Development Plan and supported our extensive achievement in planning.
"My political opponents continually talk down the health system, but this isn't the view of the independent assessors who found ACT Health to be a place where concern for patients was palpable, and an organisation committed to staff development, patient safety and risk management and clearly wanting to work with the local community to meet their needs.
"There is no doubt that parts of the health system are experiencing considerable pressure at the moment. But this report demonstrates that there are also areas of excellence and national leadership in the field, and as a whole, ACT Health offers high quality and safe services to the people of the ACT and surrounding region," Ms Gallagher said.
