ACT Chief Minister Katy Gallagher has welcomed and applauded the Gillard Government's announcement today that 135,300 homes and businesses in the ACT will be on the way to having, or will have access to NBN fibre services in the next three years.
"Today's announcement of the three year indicative NBN rollout plan is great for the ACT and I applaud the Gillard Government for their commitment to this major and critical infrastructure project," the Chief Minister said.
"Construction of the NBN is already underway to 12,000 homes in the ACT.
"The ACT's knowledge based economy, our technically savvy population and the highest internet and computer usage rates in the country will see Canberrans benefit greatly from the NBN," the Chief Minister said.
Construction of the national fibre network will begin between 1 April 2012 and 30 June 2015.
Under the three year rollout plan, construction of the ACT fibre network will begin in 51 areas (Fibre Serving Areas Modules) across Canberra each containing about 3000 homes and businesses.
"The NBN rollout in Canberra will greatly enhance our health infrastructure, provide improved online access to education and Government services and is also good news for local businesses as it will open up the possibilities for expansion far beyond the ACT borders," the Chief Minister said.
"The ACT is fast becoming the centre of new technology research, education and innovation and access to the new technological opportunities the NBN rollout is key to our growth in these areas.
"The priority given to Canberra during the early phase of the NBN rollout and today's announcement about construction over the next three years across the ACT, is recognition of the critical role the ACT plays as the cultural and services hub of the region," the Chief Minister concluded.
