ACT Chief Minister Katy Gallagher, and Minister for Police and Emergency Services, Simon Corbell, have praised and thanked the SES volunteers, emergency services personnel and ACT Government staff who displayed outstanding dedication to the Canberra community during the recent flood emergency.
The Chief Minister and Mr Corbell officially thanked workers and volunteers at a special reception at the Legislative Assembly today.
"Our ESA workers, ACT Government staff and volunteers worked tirelessly throughout the flood event to help hundreds of residents in need, and for this I pass on the government's sincerest thanks for a job well done," the Chief Minister said.
"Almost a thousand calls for help over a number of days were responded to by our workers and volunteers; with TAMS receiving over 630 reports of localised flooding and stormwater that caused numerous road closures, damage to infrastructure and landslides on some rural roads.
"Canberra Connect fielded 1,538 calls for the SES and registered a 335 per cent increase in requests for assistance related to stormwater and pothole problems," the Chief Minister said.
Mr Corbell said the work carried out by emergency services personnel not only ensured public safety but also reduced the potential impact on life and property.
"Teams from across the ACT Government, working in close cooperation with emergency service authorities and ACT SES volunteers, have performed above and beyond the call of duty during Canberra's latest crisis," he said.
"Whether it was clearing up fallen trees and branches, making emergency repairs to roads or leaky roofs, or pumping water from flooded homes, they were constantly at the ready to provide assistance."
"On behalf of all Canberrans I want to say thank you to everyone who played their part during the emergency. It is never an easy task working in extreme weather situations, but ESA, TAMS and other ACT Government staff have done a first class job ensuring public safety, and that cannot be underestimated," the Chief Minister concluded.
