Minister for Police and Emergency Services, Simon Corbell, today released a detailed strategy to provide timely emergency services coverage for all Canberrans by proposing changes to some of the locations of fire and ambulance stations.
Mr Corbell released the ACT Emergency Services Agency (ESA) Station Upgrade and Relocation Strategy which will be subject to extensive community consultation with residents and community groups.
"We live in a growing city, and this Station Upgrade and Relocation Strategy provides a plan into the future to provide important ambulance and fire brigade services to rapidly developing areas of Canberra like Tuggeranong and West Belconnen," Mr Corbell said.
"This strategy has been developed in close consultation with the Transport Workers Union (TWU) who represent intensive care paramedics, and the United Firefighters Union (UFU) who advocate for ACT Fire Brigade officers to ensure the needs of frontline personnel have been met.
"The Government is committed to ensuring the city grows to maintain appropriate ambulance and fire cover for all Canberra suburbs, and that is why the Government decided to commission this strategy and has decided to move to the implementation stage."
The project has been prioritised into four implementation phases. The first phase will deliver service improvements to:
Mr Corbell said the Government had engaged expert analysis to ensure that the ESA upgrade and relocation study was developed with optimum coverage for Canberrans with minimal disruption to service delivery.
"Some of the sites provide the opportunity to co-locate ambulance and fire services. The ESA Station Upgrade and Relocation Strategy is about maintaining and improving the coverage of our emergency services to the Canberra community as the city grows over the next 20 years," he said.
"I understand there will be considerable community interest in this project so a range of consultation activities are planned for Phase One of the Strategy over the next two months. I encourage Canberrans to have their say."
